Have you ever known of someone without actually knowing them?
You might know their name, what they look like, and what they do for a living. But you don’t know their heart. You don’t know what makes them laugh, how they handle sorrow, or how deeply they care.
For a long time, that was exactly how my relationship with God looked. I grew up knowing aboutHim. I knew the Bible stories, understood the basic religious rules, and tried my best to look like I had it all together. But underneath the surface, I was searching for meaning, acceptance, and purpose in all the wrong places. I knew about the Creator, but I did not truly know Him personally.
Maybe you find yourself in that same place today.
The Difference Between Information and Intimacy
There is a vast difference between theological information and relational intimacy. The enemy knows about God—in fact, James 2:19 tells us that even the demons believe there is one God, and they shudder.
Information changes your mind, but only intimacy transforms your life.
When we only know about God, our faith becomes a list of chores. We try to earn our salvation through good works or religious activities. But when we surrender our hearts to Jesus Christ, we step out of performance and into grace. We discover what Ephesians 2:8 beautifully declares:
“For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God.”
A Personal God Desires Your Whole Heart
We do not serve a cold, distant force universe away. We serve a personal God who numbers the hairs on your head and desires a deep connection with you.
When you move from knowing of Him to truly knowing Him, everything shifts:
- Your Prayer Life Changes: Prayer stops being a formal speech or a repetitive ritual. It becomes an honest, vulnerable conversation with a Father who listens.
- Your Identity Shifts: You stop looking for worth in personal achievements or the validation of a broken world. You find your identity firmly rooted in Christ.
- Your Trials Have a Companion: Walking with Jesus doesn’t mean your problems disappear overnight. But it means through every trial, His grace is sufficient, and His presence is constant.
He Is Still Pursuing You
If you have been wandering in a season of spiritual emptiness, dryness, or confusion, please know this: God has not forgotten you. Even when you wander, He never stops pursuing your heart.
Following Jesus is a daily journey of trust and transformation, not about immediate perfection. His mercy is always available, inviting you to come to Him and seek Him with all your heart, as promised in Jeremiah 29:13.

Seeking with Everything: Jeremiah 29:13 promises we will find Him when we seek Him with all our hearts. In our modern world full of noise and distractions, what are the primary “competing voices” that make it hardest for you to seek Him wholeheartedly?
Information vs. Intimacy: Looking honestly at your current spiritual life, do you spend more time learning about God (rules, facts, history) or actually spending time with God (honest prayer, resting in His presence)? What is one small shift you can make this week to prioritize intimacy?
The Performance Trap: Have you ever caught yourself trying to “earn” God’s love or forgiveness through your own good works or religious activities? How does the truth of Ephesians 2:8—that salvation is a completely free gift of grace—relieve that pressure?
Honest Communication: A personal God desires your authentic heart. Are there areas of your life (worries, doubts, hurts, or hidden sins) that you are holding back from Him? What is stopping you from bringing those specific things to Him in prayer today?
