The difference between a heart that is growing in Christ and a heart that is drifting from Him is not whether temptation exists, but how we respond to it.

A repentant heart confesses.

A prideful heart justifies.

The Deception of the Human Heart

The prophet Jeremiah wrote:

“The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked; who can know it?” (Jeremiah 17:9)

The human heart has an incredible ability to convince itself that wrong is right. We become skilled at defending our actions instead of examining them. We create excuses because excuses are easier than repentance.

Instead of saying, “I sinned,” we say:

“God understands.”

“Nobody is perfect.”

“I’m only human.”

“Everyone else is doing it.”

“It’s not hurting anyone.”

These statements may sound reasonable, but they often become shields that keep us from genuine repentance.

Everyone Thinks They Are Right

Scripture says:

“Every way of a man is right in his own eyes, but the Lord weighs the heart.” (Proverbs 21:2)

Notice that the Bible does not say some people think they are right.

It says every way of a man is right in his own eyes.

That is why self-examination is so difficult. We naturally become the defense attorney of our own behavior while acting as the judge of everyone else’s.

God, however, does not evaluate our lives based on our excuses.

He weighs our hearts.

Why People Suppress the Truth

Romans chapter 1 explains something profound.

Paul says that people suppress the truth because they prefer their sinful desires over God’s truth.

When people continually reject conviction, something begins to happen.

Sin that once bothered the conscience begins to feel normal.

The conscience becomes less sensitive.

The excuse becomes stronger.

Eventually, people no longer defend their sin because they think it is wrong—they defend it because they have convinced themselves it is right.

Jesus Confronted Self-Justification

Jesus told the religious leaders:

“You are those who justify yourselves before men, but God knows your hearts.” (Luke 16:15)

Notice who Jesus was speaking to.

Not criminals.

Not pagans.

Religious people.

They looked righteous on the outside while refusing to acknowledge what God saw on the inside.

This is why self-righteousness is so dangerous.

A person can appear spiritual while quietly protecting the very sin Christ came to save them from.

David’s Fall Began Before Bathsheba

King David’s greatest failure did not begin when he saw Bathsheba.

It began when he neglected his responsibility.

The Bible says:

“In the spring, at the time when kings go off to war… David remained in Jerusalem.” (2 Samuel 11:1)

Instead of being where he was called to be, David stayed behind.

One compromise opened the door to another.

Idleness became temptation.

Temptation became sin.

Sin became deception.

Deception became destruction.

Most people do not wake up intending to ruin their lives.

They arrive there one justified compromise at a time.

The Cure Is Repentance

God never asks us to defend ourselves.

He asks us to confess.

“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:9)

Confession is not weakness.

It is the beginning of freedom.

The cross of Christ is sufficient for every sin, but only those who bring their sin into the light can experience the joy of forgiveness.

Stop defending what Jesus died to forgive.

Lay down the excuses.

Come into the light.

His grace is greater than your failures, but His grace is received by humble hearts that are willing to repent.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, search my heart and reveal anything that I have excused, justified, or hidden from You.
