They believe in Christ, attend church, read the Bible, and pray—yet they still fear unlucky numbers, bad omens, horoscopes, lucky charms, or certain rituals that they believe can influence their future.

Why does this happen?

The answer is simple: becoming a Christian does not instantly erase every habit, fear, or belief we carried before coming to Christ. Spiritual growth is a lifelong journey. As we mature in God’s Word, He patiently transforms the way we think.

1. Old Beliefs Can Be Difficult to Let Go

Many people were raised in homes or cultures where superstitions were considered normal. They may have been taught to fear black cats, Friday the 13th, broken mirrors, or other signs believed to bring good or bad luck.

Even after trusting Christ, these old ways of thinking can linger. That is why discipleship and biblical teaching are so important.

2. Some Christians Have Not Been Properly Taught

Not every believer has received sound biblical teaching. A person may sincerely love Jesus while still believing things that are not supported by Scripture.

God desires that His people grow in knowledge and discernment. The more we understand His Word, the more our confidence shifts away from fear and toward faith.

3. Culture Can Influence Our Thinking

Many traditions are cultural rather than biblical. While some traditions are harmless, others teach people to rely on luck, omens, or rituals instead of trusting God.

Christ calls us to examine every belief through the truth of Scripture.

4. Fear Often Fuels Superstition

Fear is one of the strongest reasons people cling to superstitions. Someone may think, “I don’t really believe this…but what if it’s true?”

That mindset keeps people in unnecessary bondage.

The Bible repeatedly reminds us that our security is not found in luck, but in the Lord.

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding.”
— Proverbs 3:5–6

“Fear not, for I am with you.”
— Isaiah 41:10

“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.”
— 2 Timothy 1:7

The Difference Between Wisdom and Superstition

There is an important difference between wisdom and superstition.

Avoiding walking under a ladder because someone could drop a tool on your head is simply using common sense.

Avoiding it because you believe it will bring bad luck is superstition.

Christians are called to live wisely—but never fearfully.

Our Confidence Is in Christ

As believers, we are not guided by luck, fortune, horoscopes, charms, or omens. We are guided by God’s Word and the Holy Spirit.

Our future is not controlled by signs or rituals. It is held securely in the hands of our sovereign God.

As we continue growing in Christ, He replaces fear with faith, uncertainty with confidence, and superstition with biblical truth.

May we be Christians who trust God completely, knowing that nothing can separate us from His love or remove us from His faithful care.

Reflection Question:

Are there any beliefs, habits, or fears in your life that have more to do with superstition than with trusting God? Ask the Lord to reveal them, and allow His Word to replace fear with faith.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for being completely trustworthy. Forgive me for the times I have allowed fear, luck, or superstition to influence my heart instead of relying on You. Help me to grow in Your Word so that my faith is firmly rooted in Your promises. Teach me to trust You in every circumstance and to walk in the freedom that Christ has purchased for me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

By Florilyn Barnhart It may seem surprising that some Christians still hold on to superstitious beliefs.
